the strangest thing i've felt these past couple days is actually not having felt anything...even though i leave tomorrow, it still feels like i have so much time left...strange, no? all weekend long, even as i was running all over town buying stuff for my trip, it felt like i had a couple weeks before i was going anywhere...

so...i will see y'all in two months...hope everyone enjoys their summer!

and, as a parting gift, i leave this link: you'll thank me later

  • Australian boys' highway escapade
Two Australian brothers aged 10 and six drove 100km (62 miles) along a busy New South Wales highway in a bid to make a surprise visit to their grandfather.

Startled motorists called the police after seeing the boys alone in the car.

They had travelled over two-thirds of the way towards their destination, near Moree, when police pulled them over.

"They appeared to be driving normally, certainly better than probably some other people on that road," Sgt Matt Clifford of the Moree police said.

The two boys took their grandmother's car and set off up the Newell Highway, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

When police stopped them, the two boys did not seem to think they had done anything wrong. "They weren't upset or crying or anything like that," Sgt Clifford said.

He said he was amazed that the older brother managed to see over the dashboard of the car, an automatic station wagon.

"He wasn't an overly tall kid," he said.

Police gave the 10 year-old a warning, but further punishment was left to the family.

"I'm sure granddad and grandma, if not mum and dad, might have their own little chastisement for them," Sgt Clifford told the newspaper.

checked my email this morning and finally, i have a better idea of what ill be doing...

it's all classified under the rough category of 'bioinorganic chemistry and catalysis'
    • study of the biomimetic transition-metal model compounds to facilitate understandings of the catalytic processes at the enzymatic sites and development of efficient biomimetic catalysts for economical production of renewable energy sources
    • study of the paramagnetic molecules in the biological system and development of their applications in materials science
    • nano-sized materials as catalysts and energy conversion devices
no crazy biochemistry stuff, so i'm happy =D

i think somewhere else i saw mention of 'model catalyst and enzyme production using hydrogen chemistry' or something like that (rough translation...this is why online dictionaries are so helpful! im going to be so lost half the time since i know basically no chemistry terms in chinese)

two weeks left! i can't wait...

the weather's been tolerable recently, pleasantly cool at night (i've been sleeping with the window cracked open), but baking by the middle of the afternoon (i question the sanity of people who run in the heat on the asphalt...goodness!)

today was amazing...cloudy and cool all day long...a pity i didn't spend more of it outside =) i did step outside and sit on the front steps for a look at the sun as it set, though, and spied a sizable spider web extending from the railing to the ground cover i think

    web 005

thats like the bottom third of it...i probably should have sprayed some water to make it more visible

and here's more of it...all in its fuzzy glory; pity my hand shook as i snapped it

just finished reading q's legacy by helene hanff...basically, its the story of how she pretty much did nothing and became famous across the atlantic...its a fascinating story of an inspiring old englishman and a young, driven american woman

you'll have to read it to see what i mean...seriously, she did like no (serious) work, but i find myself wishing i had the guts to do what she did =)

im coming up with a list of books to read for the summer...not too long, since i don't know how much time i'll have in taiwan, but so far, i have:

    1. 84, charing cross road; by helene hanff (i actually read a bit of this two years ago in a little bookstore in taipei and forgot about it until recently)

    2. the world is flat; by thomas l. friedman (my aunt suggested it)

    3. kafka on the shore; by haruki murakami (i've found murakami to be very interesting, engrossing and page-turning [you know what i mean]...kudos to jay rubin, the translator)

    4. complete works of oscar wilde (sounds interesting enough, no?)

any other suggestions? i'm open to pretty much anything, so much as it keeps me from aimlessly whiling away the next few weeks...

oh, and i'm also looking to buy a cell phone in taiwan...hehe...need some ideas for that too...
